Expand (x−2)³

Use coefficients, powers and signs together.

Read row three

The coefficients are 1,3,3,1.

(a+b)3=a3+3a2b+3⁢ab2+b3

Substitute the signed term

Use b=−2, with parentheses.

x3+3x2(−2)+3⁢x⁢(−2)2+(−2)3

Simplify and check

The square contributes a positive term and the cube a negative term.

x3−6x2+12⁢x−8

Result

(x−2)³=x³−6x²+12x−8.

Your turn

Expand (x+3)² and identify the middle coefficient.

Show the answer and explanation

x²+6x+9; the coefficient of x is 6.

The binomial coefficient 2 multiplies x·3.
